Why Men Lie – and How to Spot Their Dishonesty

Lying is an unpleasant fact of life. Some even argue that fibbing is an unavoidable part of the human condition. None of us is completely honest at all times. Whether we weave tall tales or occasionally utter a white lie to protect someone’s feelings, none of us consistently tells the truth, the whole truth and nothing nut the truth.

Men lie. More specifically, men lie to women. Many women wonder what in the world motivates that particular brand of dishonesty. We’re not talking about a reassuring “no” when we ask if a pair of pants makes our backside look a bit oversized. We’re talking about real lies–dishonesty about things that matter. Why do men lie to women?

There are a number of reasons for male dishonesty. Some of the subterfuge is just part of being human, but other lies have specific causes. Here are a few common reasons why men lie.

First, many men may tell lies for the sake of convenience. If they don’t personally feel the issue at hand is important, it’s easy for them to gloss over the truth to make life run a bit smoother.

Second, lies stem from the fact that the forked-tongue guy telling them is afraid of dealing with the truth. Men don’t design these lies to hurt you or your relationship. They tell them because they’re too scared to deal with reality.

Third, men often lie to avoid discussion or argument. They’d prefer to avoid the truth than to deal with disagreement.

Fourth, many lies men tell women are a matter of ego protection or trying to appear more attractive in some way. Men want women’s admiration and respect. They’re not always above lying in an effort to get it!

Fifth, some men will make the mistake of lying to keep a woman happy. They lie to protect women’s feelings or to make them feel at ease in what might otherwise be stressful situations.

Finally, some guys will lie because they are more interested in themselves and their own objectives than they are in the well-being of others. These dogs will tell a whopper to improve their chances of getting a girl in the sack or will unleash a bald-faced lie to greedily advance their own interests.

Luckily, it’s often possible for women to spot those untruths by carefully observing men’s body language. When men lie, they often exhibit non-verbal behaviors that may hint that their words aren’t in alignment with the truth. Here are a few body language clues that a man may be lying.

He pauses longer than usual while speaking.

He seems to be breathing harder than he usually does.

His face and body seem to tense up while speaking.

His voice reaches a higher-than-normal pitch.

He touches or covers his face more than he usually does.

He fails to make quality eye contact.

Those non-verbal cues aren’t definitive proof of lying, but they can be strong indicators.

Lying is a complicated phenomenon. We all do it and there are many underlying causes for dishonesty. Men lie to women for a wide range of reasons. Fortunately, it’s possible to use body language to help determine if they’re being honest with women.
