"Lie detectors" – polygraphs – are as inadmissible in England as they are in the US.
If the police pursuade someone to take one they can ask them anything they want, but none of the answers can be used in court, nor can the so-called ‘result’. Polygraphs are pure "voodoo science" of no legal value at all. Their sole use is as a scare tactic.
