Well it certainly could be a habit, but perhaps he has no clue as to what YOU consider important. You may have gotten on his case before on something he considers unimportant. So he’s going to tell you whatever he thinks will get him in the least amount of trouble.
Like what? Also, women have been known to lie about small unimportant stuffs as well.
Is it something like if he ate the last cookie or why he didn’t get stamps on the way home? If it is petty bullshit that is easy to forget, the don’t even worry about it.

because they are scared that we will freak out if they tell us the truth. it just makes it worse, because when we catch them, we start wondering what else they could lie about that we didn’t catch them on.
He thinks it might make you mad…so he does it to avoid an agruement
so they don’t get in trouble

I’m guilty of it too from time to time. It’s basically to avoid any and all conflict.
I hate generalizations like these. Men don’t lie about small unimportant stuff. Women don’t lie about small unimportant stuff.

YOUR man might lie about small, unimportant stuff. But just becuase you’re with a liar doesn’t mean you can paint all men with the same brush.
In my experience men who lie about little stuff do it because they’re scared of the reaction from the woman if they tell the truth. You say it wouldn’t hurt to tell the truth, but do you know for sure you wouldn’t lose it on him?

because it might be easier just to lie rather than telling the truth spending the time explaining something.
It’s just a matter of men being from Mars and women being from Venus. They have no idea what’s a big deal to us and what isn’t. So sometimes he lies when he thinks his answer might change how you feel about him and, even more so, how you see him.
It’s also possible that it’s a habit. Although, whatever the case is… It should be addressed and corrected.
Men lie about stupid things because it is easier than explaining what really happened.
I understand what you mean. It is very frustrating but if he lies constantly then maybe he is a compulsive lier where they just feel like they have to lie its just a habit.
