I am not one that does so. I can only guess that those which do are trying hard to impress whoever they are telling to make themselves seem more appealing than they think that they are. Same reason that some people name drop or act like they know certain people or are kin in some way (whatever) it is just about impressing people!!!

I don’t think many of them do. Those who do are liars and insecure about themselves.

I have never met a man who has done that but i would assume it would be because he was embarrassed by his real family history or something like that.
